Flexible work means so much more than just working from home. At Orion, it’s about making room for the things that matter outside work, while feeling more inspired to do great work.
That looks different for everyone. It might mean more time with family, a chance to pursue a passion, or less time commuting. Whatever stage of life, a little flexibility can make a big difference.
The feedback from our team is that having more room for life outside work helps them feel more balanced in their personal lives, more connected to the people important to them, and more enthusiastic about their work.
They’ve also found that making flexible arrangements successful has helped them learn new skills in managing their time, workload, and working relationships.
It’s fair to say it’s a win-win-win for our team, our clients, and the business!
What does flexibility look like at Orion?
- Flexible public holidays: The option to swap public holidays for days of cultural or personal significance.
- Birthday leave: Because who doesn’t love a day off for their birthday?
- Purchased leave: An extra week of annual leave when you need more time for personal commitments or something special.
- Orion Performance Days: A gifted paid day off to recognise exceptional company performance.
- Regular working from home: Two days a week to skip the commute and make more time for life.
- Compressed working weeks or fortnights: Working your hours over fewer days, such as a four-day week or nine-day fortnight.
- Other ways to make work fit: Short-term work-from-anywhere arrangements, phased retirement, job sharing, part-time work, and modified hours.
One popular option is a compressed working week because of what that extra time makes possible.
We asked three of our team members how they use it, what it means to them, and how the benefits carry into their working day.
Here’s what they shared:

At Orion, we’re encouraged to work in a way that enables us to perform at our best while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Over the past few months, I’ve been working a compressed working fortnight, having every second Friday off.
While the additional day off is a great personal benefit, one of its biggest advantages is the positive impact it has on my performance at work.
Working in the land development industry requires a high level of organisation, responsiveness and problem solving. Knowing I have a longer weekend every second week has encouraged me to be even more disciplined with my time, prioritise tasks effectively, and maintain momentum across multiple projects. After a long weekend, I return to work refreshed, focused, and ready to deliver for our clients.
The arrangement has also allowed me to spend more time doing the things that are important to me outside of work. I grew up on a farm in Central West NSW and now live and work in the Illawarra. Previously, getting home was generally limited to public holiday long weekends, but having every second Friday off has made it possible to visit more regularly to spend valuable time with family and remain connected to the community where I grew up.
When I’m not heading back to the farm, I enjoy making the most of the extra day by getting out for a round of golf, catching up with family and friends, or simply taking time to recharge. Having the opportunity to step away from work and reset means I return each fortnight with renewed energy and focus.
Flexible work isn’t simply about having more time away from the office, it’s about creating an environment where people can consistently perform at their highest level. By empowering employees to balance their professional and personal commitments, Orion is investing in a culture that supports wellbeing, strengthens productivity, and ultimately delivers greater value for our clients.
I’m grateful to be part of a business that recognises that when its people thrive, its projects and clients benefit too.

I have found that my Flexible Work Arrangement has been highly beneficial both personally and professionally and has contributed positively to my overall wellbeing and work performance.
Having every second Monday off provides me with additional time to manage important personal responsibilities that can be difficult to complete during a standard work week. This includes tasks such as cooking, cleaning and exercising, allowing me to maintain a healthier and more balanced lifestyle. As a result, I return to work feeling more organised, refreshed and better prepared for the week ahead.
The arrangement also provides valuable opportunities for rest and recreation. Having a long weekend every second week enables me to mentally reset, spend time playing golf, and occasionally take longer weekends away without requiring additional leave. In addition, the extra day off gives me the opportunity to travel back to Wagga, where I grew up, allowing me to maintain important family and community connections.
Overall, this arrangement has significantly improved my work-life balance and has had a positive impact on my wellbeing. By allowing regular opportunities to rest, recharge and attend to personal commitments, I believe the FWA has enabled me to maintain a high level of motivation, productivity and engagement in my role while continuing to contribute effectively to the business.

With every second Friday off under a compressed working fortnight, I’ve seen clear benefits in both my work and my home life.
A regular day off gives me a consistent opportunity to switch off but has also sharpened how I plan. I prioritise earlier, close out tasks sooner and return with a clear head, which matters in an industry that relies on responsiveness and careful problem solving.
As a new parent, the extra day means I can be involved in my child’s routine, attend appointments and activities and share the load at home during a demanding period.
The arrangement works because it comes with accountability. Deadlines and expectations stay the same, so the result is better planning, not reduced output.
Orion’s approach to flexibility reflects a simple view: when people can manage their work and personal responsibilities well, they perform well. It’s a practical benefit for staff and for the clients we deliver for.

These stories show how different team members have made flexible arrangements work for them, creating room for a fuller life outside of work and renewed energy when they return.
